Welcome to the Genealogy/North Carolina Room at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library
Patrick Beaver Memorial Library's Genealogy/North Carolina Room provides resources for patrons in researching local history, regional history, and genealogy. An extensive collection of volumes provide information both on historical records of North Carolina and its counties, and on the areas from which Catawba County ancestors migrated. Other volumes focus on specific family genealogies, histories of Catawba County and other North Carolina areas, church histories, changes in education, histories of local sports programs and studies of historic Hickory architecture. Print materials include genealogical society journals, local newspaper clippings, scrapbooks created by Hickory citizens, minutes from community organizations, yearbooks from some local schools and personal histories written by local citizens. These materials help researchers understand how the community evolved sinces its inception. They offer insight into the activities of yesterday, the contributions of our ancestors and everyday life in the past. Maps, microfilm, CDs, and on-line resources supplement the print collection.
Materials in the Genealogy/North Carolina Room must be used in the room, but duplicate copies of some books are in the circulating collection. Manyof the items are fragile and require special treatment. Food, drink, ink and rough handling risk permanent damage to items in the collection. We ask that patrons supervise children visiting in the room to ensure that they use materials appropriately.
From the Hickory Public Library website, patrons can access a number of resources:
Researchers can access Ancestry on computers housed in the Genealogy/North Carolina Room. Patrons with Hickory Public Library cards can use Ancestry on computers in the Reference Department.
