City of Hickory to construct Old Lenoir Road multiuse trail

Old Lenoir Road is about to get a makeover, thanks to an $8.48 million grant from the Greater Hickory Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT).  At its May 7 meeting, Hickory City Council unanimously approved an agreement with the NCDOT to receive the federal funds to construct a multiuse trail and make streetscape improvements along Old Lenoir Road.

Final component of City Walk out to bid

The final component of the City Walk is now being advertised for bid.  The City Walk multiuse path will run along Main Avenue, starting at Seventh Avenue NE (in front of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church) and traveling through Downtown Hickory to Ninth Street NW (in front of Deluxe Printing Group and Aiken-Black Tire Service).

First Gateway Completed

Drivers entering Hickory on U.S. Highway 321 are now greeted by a beautiful, artistic leaf sculpture at the Highway 70 exit ramp.

Book Walk plans approved by Hickory City Council

At its April 2 meeting, Hickory City Council approved to move forward with the selected alignment and presented plans for the Book Walk, as recommended by the Bond Implementation Commission.

Downtown Construction Begins Next Week

Neill Grading and Construction, Inc., the firm hired by the City of Hickory, will officially begin Union Square renovations and streetscape improvements in Downtown Hickory next week.  However, downtown visitors may see activity and preparations for construction in the next few days.

Contractor hired for Downtown Hickory renovations

At its March 19 meeting, Hickory City Council approved a construction contract with Neill Grading and Construction Company, Inc. in the amount of $3.53 million for renovations to Union Square and streetscape improvements in Downtown Hickory.

Road Closures on Main Avenue NE and Second Avenue NE

Beginning Monday, March 18, sections of Main Avenue NE and Second Avenue NE will be closed as Hickory Sand Company, Inc. continues installing a new water main in preparation for the City Walk.

Road closures on Main Avenue NE and First Avenue NE

Main Avenue NE, from Second Street NE to Second Avenue NE, is currently closed for traffic as Hickory Sand, Inc. continues installing a new water main.  In addition, the section of First Avenue NE from N.C. 127 to Main Avenue NE is closed to prevent access to the work area.  These closures are expected to remain in place until March 15.  Detour routes are established and clearly marked.

Detours continue along Main Avenue NE

Hickory Sand Company, Inc. will continue installing a new water main along Main Avenue NE.  This water and sewer replacement project is in preparation for the City Walk.  The next area to be closed is Main Avenue NE, from 2nd Street NE to 1st Avenue NE.  This closure is expected to begin on Thursday, February 21, and remain in place for approximately one week, depending upon weather conditions.  Detour routes will be established and clearly marked.

Hickory Awarded $400,000 Golden LEAF Grant

The Golden LEAF Foundation recently awarded a $400,000 grant to the City of Hickory for its economic development project with Isotopen Technologies Munchen AG (ITM) at Trivium Corporate Center.
