Self-Defense Class at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library

The Take Back the Night Foundation has designated the last Thursday in April as a day for communities to unite and demonstrate their support for survivors of sexual violence and violence against women through special programming.   Diane Christensen is providing a free Self-Defense Class on Thursday, April 25, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. in support of the Foundation’s mission of creating safe communities and respectful relationships.

The City of Hickory will close its offices on Friday, April 19, in observance of the Easter holiday, but garbage and recycling pickup will continue on Friday.

Schizophrenia: Psychosis and Antipsychotic Medications

Come to Patrick Beaver Memorial Library on Wednesday April 17, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. for two sessions about schizophrenia, a serious mental disorder that causes people to interpret reality abnormally. VayaHealth’s Geriatric and Adult Mental Health Specialty Team will teach us about schizophrenia and antipsychotic medications. People with schizophrenia experience delusions, disordered thinking, hallucinations, and disorganized behavior. Negative symptoms include being unable to function and care for themselves, loss of interest in activities and inability to experience pleasure.  The symptoms can be disabling and lifelong treatment is required.

Small Business Programs at the Ridgeview Branch Library

Thinking about starting a small business but unsure of where to begin? Join us at the Ridgeview Branch of the Hickory Public Library on Monday, April 8 at 1 PM and Tuesday, April 9 at 6 PM to learn the basic steps to small business success. Have questions about how to write a business plan, establish a business structure, name your business, secure financing, incorporate, obtain licenses and permits, and how to perform market, industry, and demographic research? We have answers! Representatives from the City of Hickory will also be present to provide information and answer questions about the City’s Small Business Loan Program.

Organic Gardening Presentation at Patrick Beaver Memorial Lib

Join Dr. George Place, Catawba County Cooperative Extension Director, on Thursday, April 11, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. in a presentation about organic gardening and the various ways to manage pests, kill weeds, prevent diseases, and deliver needed plant nutrition to your garden.  This presentation is part of our Advanced Gardener series designed to help both beginner and advanced gardeners enjoy all of the health, enjoyment, and learning that comes from managing the home landscape and growing some of your own produce.

Hickory Public Library funds Imagination Library subscriptions for Hickory children

Hickory Public Library will provide $12,500 to the Catawba County Partnership for Children’s Imagination Library program.  This contribution will fund Imagination Library subscriptions for 500 children to ensure that all 1,200 enrolled children in the Hickory city limits can receive books in the mail.

Movie Night at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library

Patrick Beaver Memorial Library will host a movie night on Monday, April 8, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. in honor of National Autism Awareness Month.  The documentary Life, Animated, from Academy Award winning director Roger Ross Williams, will be shown.  Life, Animated is based on the bestselling book by Ron Suskind, Life, animated: a story of sidekicks, heroes, and autism.

First Friday with a Local Author at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library

On Friday, April 5, 2019 at 12:00 p.m., the First Friday with a Local Author program will introduce us to Robert Canipe, the Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of Redhawk Publications, the Catawba Valley Community College press.  Canipe will share his experiences and talk about a couple of their newest releases:  Polio, Pitchforks, and Perseverance about the 1944 Catawba County Polio outbreak and Newton: Then & Now photo history.
