Come to Patrick Beaver Memorial Library on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at 12:30 p.m. for a West African Dance Class led by the Suah African Dance Theatre.  This class is for all levels and ages.  Please come with an open mind and positive energies to work as a team learning about West African traditional song and dance.  The Suah African Dance Theatre is a professional touring African drum and dance company based in Greensboro, NC.

Patrick Beaver Memorial Library is offering one-on-one sessions for those interested in learning the basics using email on June 17th, 1:00-4:00 PM. Topics to be covered include setting up a web-based email account, sending and receiving emails and attaching files to email messages.

Summer Lawn Care Presentation at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library

A series of presentations focusing on lawn care is being offered at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library.  This second of three presentations will focus on summer lawn maintenance and it will be offered on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at 6:00 p.m.  Each of the presentations in the Lawn Care by the Season series will be led by Adam Smith and focus on a specific season of lawn maintenance.

Summer Learning Kick Off Celebration at the Ridgeview Branch Library

3, 2, 1…Blast off into the Ridgeview Branch Library to celebrate the start of an awesome Summer Learning program full of stars, astronauts, aliens, and awesome stories! To celebrate, SUAH African Dance Theatre will perform at the Ridgeview Recreation Center at 2 pm on Saturday, June 15. Following their performance the party will move right next door to the Ridgeview Branch Library for frozen yogurt from Di’lishi, groovy caricatures from artist Jerry Frazee, and more fun activities and games. Please note that there will be a limit of one frozen yogurt per person present and will be served on a first come basis. This family event is free and open to the public.

Stonewall Uprising film screening at the Ridgeview Branch Library

Celebrate Pride month by visiting the Ridgeview Branch of the Hickory Public Library on Thursday, June 13 at 6 pm for a special screening of Stonewall Uprising. A documentary from the PBS history series American Experience detailing the history of the police raids at the Stonewall Inn in June 1969 and the impact they had on the gay civil rights movement in the US. Stick around after the film for refreshments and discussion facilitated by Ed Farthing who has spent a good portion of his adult life advocating for the LGBTQ community through his law practice and his work with Equality NC and OUTright Youth. This event is free and open to the public.

First Friday with a Local Author at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library

On Friday, June 7, 2019 at 12:00 p.m., the First Friday with a Local Author program will feature author Dale Bailey.  Bailey will share his past experiences that have led to him becoming a successful writer.  His newest release, In the Night Wood, has been recognized as a Tor.com Reviewers’ Choice: The Best Books of 2018, one of The Lineup’s 10 Best Horror Books of 2018, and added to the Locus Recommended Reading List 2018.  Bailey also recently became a Shirley Jackson Awards Nominee for a Novel and a Locus Awards Finalist for a Horror Novel.  Bailey describes In the Night Wood as a ghost story, but also a story about grief, loss, and redemption.

Water remains safe after overflow

The City of Hickory had a discharge of untreated wastewater on 05/30/19 of an estimated 1,670 gallons in the 1400 block of 33rd St Ln NE.  The untreated wastewater was discharged into Lyle Creek.
