Friends of Hickory Public Library Announce National Library Week Bookmark Contest

The Friends of Hickory Public Library is once again sponsoring its annual bookmark contest for children.  The contest is part of the library’s National Library Week celebration. Area children are invited to participate through their school, youth organization, home, or Patrick Beaver Memorial and Ridgeview Branch Libraries. All children in grades K-8 are eligible to submit one entry each. A winner will be chosen from each grade, and their bookmarks will be printed and used as the library’s official bookmark for distribution during the coming year. Prizes will be awarded to each winner. A selection of bookmark entries will be on display at both libraries during National Library Week, April 7-13. This year’s bookmark theme is “Libraries Lead.”

SilverSneakers® fitness program now available at Highland Recreation Center

The City of Hickory’s Parks and Recreation Department is now a proud partner of SilverSneakers®, the nation’s leading community fitness program designed exclusively for older adults.  Through this collaboration, Highland Recreation Center will now provide complementary memberships to members of the nationally recognized SilverSneakers program and offer older adults a way to increase their levels of physical activity while motivating them to remain active.

Local Author Application Available for First Friday Program at Library

Patrick Beaver Memorial Library hosts a First Friday with a Local Author program every month from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.  The application for local authors interested in participating is now available.  This program offers local authors the opportunity to share about themselves, their writings, and their path to getting their work published with a small group of other like-minded community members.

Free Mental Health Training Sessions with Vaya Health

Please join us for two training sessions at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library on Wednesday February 20th, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. VayaHealth’s Geriatric and Adult Mental Health Specialty Team will present the first session at 10:00 a.m., which is “PTSD: Invisible Scars.” Team members will present relevant information pertinent to traumatic events and experiences. The second session at 11:00 a.m. is “Commonly Misused Medications: Understanding Medication Effects on the Aging Brain.”  This evidence-informed presentation identifies commonly misused medications among older adults. Participants also review risk factors, physiological differences related to aging and treatments and interventions.

Open Door Book Club to Meet at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library

The public is encouraged to participate in discussions about books in a friendly environment with the Open Door Book Club. The Open Door Book Club will meet on Wednesday, February 27th at 3:30 pm in the Conference Room on the 2nd floor of Patrick Beaver Memorial Library.  The selection for February is The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George. Copies are available to be picked up at the 2nd floor service desk.  Join other book enthusiasts to explore your love of reading.

Unwind after your busy Monday at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library’s Craft Club. The Craft Club meets each Monday at 6:00 pm in the upstairs conference room of Patrick Beaver Memorial Library. Bring your latest project and enjoy the company of fellow crafters as you share ideas, know-how and conversation. Bright Star Theatre comes to the Library

Bright Star Touring Theatre brings the stories and songs of Africa to life in a joyful performance at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library on Saturday, February 23rd at 11:00 a.m.  This nationally acclaimed children’s theatre company will present African Folktales, celebrating the various folk traditions from the Sahara to the Serengeti to Mount Kilimanjaro and beyond. Traditional music from the continent of Africa helps set the stage for these energetic stories, which include Anansi and porquoi tales along with lots of information about this incredible continent. Kids of all ages and their families will love this vibrant and energetic show.
