Broccoli, Brussel Sprouts, Cabbage, and More Workshop at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library

Join Dr. George Place, Catawba County Cooperative Extension Director, at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library on Thursday, January 12th at 6:00 p.m. for a presentation focusing on how to improve garden productivity of broccoli, Brussel sprouts, cabbage, and more.  Kick off the New Year by joining us in the first of eleven presentations for the 2017 Advanced Gardener series.  Come find out why this program won the Best Adult Education Library program for the state of North Carolina.

Hickory City Council announces Warren Wood as new city manager

Hickory City Council announced during their January 3 meeting that Warren Wood has been hired as the city’s new city manager.

The Play’s the Thing Book Club at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library

Come join the newest book club in Hickory.  The Play’s the Thing Book Club is a play reading book club.  There will be opportunities for reading plays prior to their performances at local area theatres and also to read plays suggested by participants.

Captain John Crane Retires from Fire Department

Hickory - After 31 and ½ dedicated years to the fire service, Captain John Crane has retired from the Hickory Fire Department.  After his father, Larry Crane retired as a Captain with Hickory, Crane began his employment with the City of Hickory on November 2, 1987, when he was hired as a firefighter.

Make Your Own Jewelry at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library

Registration has begun for a jewelry making class for adults at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library on Saturday, January 7th.  The same class will be offered first at 9:00 a.m. and then again at 1:00 p.m.  Please sign up for only one of the classes offered on that day.

During the class, participants will learn how to use hammers to texture lightweight, non-reactive aluminum into a fabulous wrap ring.  Tools and materials are included.  No experience necessary.

Genealogy Workshop at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library

Patrick Beaver Memorial Library is offering a Genealogy Workshop on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at 7:00 p.m.  Join Peggy Mainess, Hickory Public Library’s Genealogist, in a presentation about using religious and funeral records in genealogy research.

Many people think that the epitome of New Year celebrations occurs in New York on Times Square, but that is not true.  All across North Carolina communities have celebrations unique to their heritage and customs.  While these celebrations may lack universal appeal, they reflect important community ties.

Lowes Foods City Park to open December 17

The Lowes Foods City Park is opening to the public on Saturday, December 17.  The park, located in Downtown Hickory on the corner of Third Street and Main Avenue NW, was the first project spearheaded by Friends of Hickory, an organization of private citizens, dedicated to investing in the welfare and prosperity of the City of Hickory and its surrounding communities.

NCDOT’s “Booze It & Lose It” campaign kicked off in Hickory

With the holiday season comes holiday parties and celebrations.  Too often, drunk driving becomes an issue during this festive time of the year. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and the Governor’s Highway Safety Program (GHSP) are working to keep the holidays joyful and prevent drunk driving accidents on North Carolina roadways.
