The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) approved a $1,500,000 grant for Burke County, N.C., and the City of Hickory to construct access road improvements leading into a proposed industrial park located in the City of Hickory.  The ARC funds will be used to widen and improve approximately 0.89 mile of roadway on 9th Avenue Drive NW to Goat Farm Road, adjacent to the Hickory Regional Airport.

“Hickory Regional Airport is a great asset for Hickory and the surrounding region.  Improving access to the airport in Burke County will strengthen opportunities for future development,” said Hickory Mayor Hank Guess.  “The City of Hickory is fortunate to have a collaborative partnership with neighboring Burke County on this project.”

Burke Development Incorporated (BDI) and the City of Hickory are working to attract other industrial users and have recently had increased interest in the proposed park.

The primary benefit resulting from this project is improved accessibility into the industrial site, which supports efforts to attract new businesses into the park.  It is estimated that the project will support the creation of approximately 150 new jobs at the proposed industrial park.

“This infrastructure project with the City of Hickory supports Burke County’s efforts to attract new businesses and grow the local economy in the eastern end of Burke County.  The collaborative effort between the City of Hickory and Burke County to see this project come to fruition adds more meaning to the Burke County motto of ‘ALL ABOUT ADVANCING,’” added Johnnie Carswell, Chairman of the Burke County Board of Commissioners.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will administer the project and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) will serve as the basic federal agency for the project.  In addition to ARC funds, the City of Hickory will contribute $1,161,216 to the project for a total estimated project cost of $2,661,216.
