The administrative staff consists of a Fire Chief, two Deputy Chiefs, and two Administrative Assistants. The responsibility for all Fire Department operations begins here. Using input from staff members, committee members within the department, and utilizing the individual firefighters' ideas, a plan is then formulated by the Chief's staff to create a cost-effective fire service delivery system.
Matthew Hutchinson began his firefighting career as a volunteer firefighter, and in 2003, he was hired as a full-time firefighter with the Hickory Fire Department. He moved through the ranks, eventually serving as Battalion Chief over Logistics, Battalion Chief/Fire Marshal over the Fire & Life Safety Division, and currently the Fire Chief of the deparment.
Hutchinson has certifications as a Fire Service Instructor Level II, Level II Firefighter, Fire & Life Safety Educator I-III, and Technical Rescuer through the North Carolina Fire & Rescue Commission. Hutchinson continues to maintain his certifications as an Emergency Medical Technician and as a Fire Inspector. He is currently working to obtain his certification as a Certified Fire Investigator. In 1994, he graduated from UNC-Asheville with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Criminal Justice. In December 2008, he completed his Master’s degree in Public Administration from Appalachian State University.
In April 2017, Hutchinson completed the prestigious four-year Executive Fire Officer Program through the National Fire Academy (NFA). He has North Carolina Fire Officer I, II, & III certifications, Incident Command System 100-400 certifications, and the Chief 101 certification. Hutchison is also a graduate of the Fire and Rescue Management Institute through UNC-Charlotte, which provides instruction in leadership, team building, management skills, strategic planning, communication skills, and personnel management. The program is designed to prepare participants to become more effective in the increasingly challenging and complex world of fire and rescue management.
Steve Moore was hired as a Fire Inspector with the Hickory Fire Department in 1999. After the retirement of Greg Rohr in 2009, Moore was promoted to Deputy Chief of Fire & Life Safety. He later served as Deputy Chief of Operations, and is currently Deputy Chief of Administration for the department.
Brian Murray was recently promoted to Deputy Chief of Operations. Murray has been with the department since 1991 and has served in the roles of firefighter, Captain, and Battalion Chief. He is a certified Fire Service Instructor Level II, a Technical Rescuer, and a Level II Firefighter through the North Carolina Fire & Rescue Commission. He is also certified as an EMT-Intermediate.
Murray earned an Associate’s Degree in Fire Protection Technology from Cleveland Community College and is pursuing his Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Administration. He has obtained Fire Officer I, II, and III certification and teaches courses through local colleges. Murray has provided autism recognition and response training for firefighters and first responders throughout North Carolina, providing strategies for aiding persons with autism in emergencies. For the last three years, he has led the Hickory Fire Department Bikes for Tykes charity event, which has provided bicycles for underprivileged children in the community.
The Administration headquarters is located in the upper level of Fire Station 1.
