The City of Hickory has joined with the Greater Hickory Tennis Association (GHTA) in a priority use agreement for tennis complex improvements at Hickory City Park. The improvements consist of a major parking lot renovation, which will take the current 20 parking spaces to 122 parking spaces. Also planned is a new 1,900 square foot multi-use facility that will house restrooms, indoor meeting space, and an outdoor covered shelter area.
Not only will the renovations enhance the park and create parking for tennis tournaments and events, but it will also be utilized for the future Riverwalk. Once the Riverwalk is constructed and open, pedestrian access will be available from the Hickory City Park to the Riverwalk.
The GHTA has agreed to contribute $125,000 to the total cost of the project, of which they have already contributed $50,000. The estimated total project cost is $921,000. Construction bids for the project were accepted in August and ground is scheduled to break on the project later this fall and construction time is estimated at approximately six months.
