Grand Prizes for Adults at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library

There are just a few more days to participate in the 2019 Summer Learning Program for Adults with Hickory Public Library.  Participate by picking up a bingo form to complete at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library or Ridgeview Library.  Receive a ceramic coffee mug (while supplies last) when you turn in your completed bingo form and be entered in a drawing for several Grand Prizes.  Bingo forms will be accepted through August 24, 2019.

Hickory Police hire new Community Navigator to assist homeless

This week, Hickory Police Department welcomed Casey McCall as the City’s new Community Navigator. As Community Navigator, McCall will be responsible for coordinating and directing services across all resources and local partners for homeless individuals in Hickory, who have a variety of complex health, social, and functional needs.

The 100 Year Old Gardener Workshop at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library

Join us at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library on Thursday, August 22, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. to learn how to maintain long-term healthy living.  This workshop, The 100 Year Old Gardener, will focus on how to foster longevity of the body and mind in and outside of the garden.  This talk will delve into what science can teach us about maintaining our independence as we age, especially out of doors, so that we can keep doing the things that we love. This talk is presented in collaboration with Catawba County Cooperative Extension Center.

Free Practice SAT Exam at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library

Revolution Prep will be providing a free full-length Practice SAT Exam for local-area high school students at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library on Monday, August 19, 2019 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  Experiencing a full-length practice exam is invaluable for students to reduce anxiety and develop success strategies for the actual exam.  Each practice test comes with a complimentary score report and review with Revolution Prep’s Academic Advisor, which will allow students and parents to review strengths and opportunities for improvement.

Karma Yoga Classes at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library

Join Yoga Instructor Ms. Pradnya (aka Swati) at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library for free Karma Yoga classes every Wednesday at 6:00 pm. Prior yoga experience is not necessary and classes can be joined at any time.  Simple, safe and practical yoga stretches and movements are taught to help the Karma yogis relax as well as strengthen the mind-body-spirit. Pradnya offers modifications to people with little to no mobility. The class puts emphasis on mindfulness and universal meditation based on the concept of good 'Karma' (deeds). This class is NOT a substitute for any medical or mental health issues. Participants are asked to wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat.

Science Fiction Film Fest Concludes at the Carolina Theater with Solaris 08/14/2019

To celebrate A Universe of Stories as part of the Hickory Public Library’s summer learning program, the Ridgeview Branch is presenting a Science Fiction Film Fest at the Carolina Theater in downtown Hickory. This series of free film screenings concludes on Wednesday, August 14 at 7 pm with a showing of Solaris, Andrei Tarkovski’s 1972 science fiction epic.

Hickory Fire among 25 departments nationwide to receive NFPA grant

The Hickory Fire Department has been selected as one of 25 departments to receive a grant from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) as part of its pilot program to build a community risk assessment (CRA) tool. The tool will enable fire departments to make data-informed decisions around fire prevention and other risk-reduction activities.
