Open Door Book Club at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library

The public is encouraged to participate in discussions about books in a relaxed environment with the Open Door Book Club. The Open Door Book Club will meet on Wednesday, July 24th at 3:30 pm in the Conference Room on the 2nd floor of Patrick Beaver Memorial Library.  The selection for July is A Year in Provence by Peter Mayle. Copies are available to be picked up at the 2nd floor service desk.  Join other book enthusiasts to explore your love of reading.

Super Seniors play tennis at Hickory City Park

Every Thursday and Friday morning at Hickory City Park, a spirited bunch of senior women gather to practice tennis and enjoy fellowship.  Hickory tennis pro and longtime instructor Kathy Kim leads the group and affectionately calls them her “Super Seniors.”

Digital Camera Astrophotography Workshop at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library

A beginner’s level Digital Camera Astrophotography Workshop will be offered at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library on Monday, July 22, 2019 at 6:30 p.m.  There are many factors to consider when selecting and using a Digital Camera to achieve your astrophotography goals.  Catawba Valley Astronomy Club member John O’Neal will teach you all about pixel pitch, array size, arc seconds per pixels, image scale, and how to optimize your scope.  Learn the when, how, and why of shooting with custom white balance offsets to correct light pollution.  Successfully employing these enhancement techniques will raise your astrophotos to a whole new level.  If already owned, please feel free to bring your Digital Camera along with a tripod and an adaptor to attach the two together.

6-Week GED Preparation Class Begins at the Ridgeview Branch Library

The Ridgeview Branch of the Hickory Public Library is pleased to offer a free, 6-week GED preparation class. This class will be held at the Ridgeview Branch every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 7-8 pm beginning Tuesday, July 16 at 7 pm and continuing Thursday, July 18 at 7 pm.

Science Fiction Film Fest Continues at the Carolina Theater with Fantastic Planet 07/17/2019

To celebrate A Universe of Stories as part of the Hickory Public Library’s summer learning program, the Ridgeview Branch is presenting a Science Fiction Film Fest at the Carolina Theater in downtown Hickory. This series of free film screenings continues on Wednesday, July 17 at 7 pm with a showing of Fantastic Planet, René Laloux’s 1973 animated extravaganza.

Road closure at intersection of 3rd Avenue NW and 4th Street NW

The intersection of 3rd Avenue NW and 4th Street NW has been closed to all traffic due to a tree that could become a potential hazard to motorists.  Detour routes are established and clearly marked.  The closure is expected to remain in place for approximately one day for contractors to remove the tree.
