Genealogy Thursday: Let’s Get Technical Workshop at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library

Join Patrick Beaver Memorial Library genealogist Peggy Mainess on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at 7:00 pm for a workshop on ways technology can be used to assist in genealogical research. This session will explore the use of on-line resources in finding answers to genealogical questions. Special emphasis will be given to the use of social media in that research. Other topics to be explored during this session include the use of DNA testing and how to use technology to preserve research.

Quilling with the Hickory Museum of Art at the Ridgeview Branch Library

Visit the library on Wednesday, May 9 at 6 pm to learn the art of quilling from the Hickory Museum of Art. Quilling involves using strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. You can use your rolled shapes to create a design of your choice such as flowers, hearts, swirls, and more! All supplies will be provided.

Flower Painting with the Hickory Museum of Art at the Ridgeview Branch Library

Looking to make something unique for a special lady in your life? Hickory Museum of Art will be at the library on Tuesday, May 8, beginning at 4 pm to help you make something beautiful. Elementary aged students will be using oil pastels and watercolors to paint flowers in a vase to give as a gift or keep as decoration for themselves. All supplies will be provided.

Creepy Critters at the Ridgeview Branch Library

Bring the family to the Ridgeview Library on Saturday, May 5 at 2 pm to find out more about the “creepy” side of the animal world! A representative from the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation will have examples of snakes, bats, owls, spiders, insects and other creepy critters (some living examples!). We will look at the positive side of these animals and see that even though an animal may be perceived as creepy it is still important to an ecosystem.

Origami Book Art for Kids

Kids ages 10 and up are invited to learn how to create beautiful origami accordion books in a workshop at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library on Saturday, May 5th at 2:00 pm. These beautifully crafted books make wonderful personal keepsakes or a very special Mother’s Day gift.  Within the inner folds you can place your wishes, or secrets, or deepest feelings.

City of Hickory receives first place for state communicators Excellence in Communications Award

The City of Hickory was among 23 North Carolina governments to earn recognition in the Eleventh North Carolina City & County Communicators’ (NC3C) Excellence in Communications Awards.  City of Hickory won First Place for TV/Video in the Videography category for the Hickory. Life Well Crafted. “Get to Know Hickory” Video Campaign.

Hickory’s Communications and Marketing Manager, Dana Kaminske, elected President of state communicators’ organization

Communities across North Carolina gathered at the annual North Carolina City & County Communicators’ (NC3C) Conference in New Bern, April 18 through 20.  At the membership meeting on Friday, April 20, Dana Kaminske, the Communications and Marketing Manager for the City of Hickory, was elected to the President position on the NC3C board for 2018.

Dedication ceremony to be held for the Charles D. Dixon Memorial Splash Pad

The Hickory Kiwanis and Western Catawba County Kiwanis Clubs held an official dedication ceremony for the recently named Charles D. Dixon Memorial Splash Pad on May 1 at 11:00 a.m. at Kiwanis Park. The dedication ceremony also marked the reopening of the splash pad for the 2018 season.

2018 Sails Original Music Series kicks off with Sam Reider and The Human Hands

Friday, May 4, the City of Hickory and Bob Sinclair Music will kick off the 2018 Sails Original Music Series, which is being presented by Lowes Foods.  The series will feature music from national and international touring acts, performing every Friday night in May, June, and September under the Sails on the Square in Downtown Hickory, beginning at 6:30 p.m.  This year’s series begins with Sam Reider and The Human Hands.  For more information about the Sails Original Music Series and upcoming bands, please visit the Sails Music Series Facebook page – www.facebook.com/SailsMusic.
