February Needlecraft Club Meetings at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library

Join fellow crafters for Needlecraft Club gatherings on Monday, February 5th and Monday, February 19th at 6:00 p.m. in Patrick Beaver Memorial Library’s conference room.  Bring your latest knit, crochet or other crafty work-in-progress to this informal group.  All skill levels are welcome to socialize and share techniques, ideas and patterns.  The Needlecraft Club meets on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of every month at 6:00 p.m.

Lisa Camichos to Present a Program on the Orlando Plan at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library

Join Hickory High School teacher Lisa Camichos on Thursday, February 1st at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library at 6:30 pm to learn about the Orlando Plan.  In 1946, two years before the Marshall Plan would begin the work of rebuilding Europe, civic organizations across the United States were encouraged to send help to a devastated Europe.  Leaders in the city of Orlando, FL approached John Camichos, a prominent business person and immigrant from Greece, for suggestions.

City of Hickory Solid Waste Department Updates

The City of Hickory Solid Waste Division will not be collecting garbage, recycling or yard waste on Wednesday, January 17 due to the inclement weather.  Wednesday scheduled collection will begin on a delayed start on Thursday, January 18.  This is being done to allow temperatures to get above freezing and to assist in the road clearing process.  Yard waste and leaf pickup will be suspended for the rest of the week and will resume normally on Monday, January 22.  Please leave your rollouts at the curb until they can be serviced.  As the day progresses, further decisions will be made about any other schedule changes.

Job Tips with Nicole: Building at Better Resume

Are you trying to re-enter the work force or move forward in your career? Nicole Morse, Branch Manager of the Ridgeview Branch Library, is hosting a course on Thursday, February 1, beginning at 5:30 pm to offer tips and tricks on building a resume. Learn what businesses are looking for in a good resume, how to start building a strong resume, and how you can highlight your skills and strengths. A follow-up lab will be open on Thursday, February 8, beginning at 5:30 pm for any job seekers who need additional one-on-one help creating a resume. Space is limited, so please call to register by Monday, January 29th.

City takes precautions ahead of winter weather

The City of Hickory’s Street Department is busy preparing for the winter weather.  The bridges have been brined, as well as some major streets, and City staff will continue that effort throughout the day.  Crews will report Tuesday evening to prepare for the event, respond to calls, and begin the cleanup efforts.  Snow plows are prepared and will be used to plow and salt/sand the streets as necessary.

Protect Your Identity Workshop and Shredding Event at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library

A representative from the NCDOJ Attorney General’s Office will lead a workshop at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. to help us become scam smart.  Recommendations based on recent security breaches will be provided from the NCDOJ on how to protect yourself and family from identity theft.  Additionally, from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. on January 27th, Enviro-Shred, a Hickory based shredding company, will provide individuals with the opportunity to shred at no charge up to two boxes or bags of personal documents in Patrick Beaver Memorial Library’s parking lot.  The two boxes or bags must not be larger than the size of banker boxes (10"H x 15"W x 24"D).
