Smartphone Astrophotography Workshop at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library

A beginner’s level Smartphone Astrophotography Workshop will be offered at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library on Monday, July 15, 2019 at 6:30 p.m.  Astronomers are always looking for new ways to make astronomy relevant to upcoming generations.  There are over 8 billion smartphones in the world, all capable of taking great astrophotos.  Catawba Valley Astronomy Club member John O’Neal will teach you some tips, tricks, and techniques to capture astrophotos with your smartphone.  Attend the presentation to learn the how’s and why’s and then step outside for a hands-on imaging session. Bring your phone, a tripod if you have one, and an adaptor to attach the two together.

Introduction To Windows 10 Appointments Available at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library

Patrick Beaver Memorial Library is offering one-on-one sessions for those interested in learning the basics of Windows 10 on July 22nd, 2019, 1:00-4:00 PM. Topics to be covered include a basic overview of the interface, using the Start Menu, where various functions and settings were relocated, security/privacy settings, and any questions related to Windows 10 usage.

Firefighter Promoted

Hickory Fire Department Battalion Chief Brian Murray has been promoted to Deputy Chief of Operations.  Murray has been with the department since 1991 and has served in the roles of firefighter, Captain, and Battalion Chief.  He is a certified Fire Service Instructor Level II, a Technical Rescuer, and a Level II Firefighter through the North Carolina Fire & Rescue Commission.  He is also certified as an EMT-Intermediate.

Hickory Senior Fire Inspector Retires

After 15 years of service with the City of Hickory, Fire Inspector Kelly Davis has retired.  He was hired on January 12, 2004 as a Fire Inspector Plan Reviewer and in 2010, Davis was promoted to Senior Fire Inspector.

Hickory Fire Battalion Chief Retires

After 30 years of service, Battalion Chief David Cozart has retired from the Hickory Fire Department. Cozart began his employment as a firefighter with the city on December 11, 1989.  Through the years, he was promoted to Senior Firefighter, Fire Apparatus Operator, Fire Captain, and Battalion Chief over suppression, and in 2017 to Battalion Chief of Logistics and Support Services.
