Post-Polio Syndrome Program at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library

Join us at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library on Thursday, September 19, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. to learn about Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS), a condition that can affect polio survivors decades after they recover from their initial poliovirus infection.  As the 75th Anniversary of the Miracle of Hickory is recognized, it is important to learn more about PPS which can affect polio survivors decades after their initial poliovirus infection.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, PPS affects about 25-40 of every 100 polio survivors.  This program will provide a brief description of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and then delve into the proposed mechanisms of Post-Polio Syndrome and how to best manage symptoms.

Tom Dooley Program at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library

A program on the Legend of Tom Dooley will be offered at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at 6:30 p.m.  Author Charlotte Barnes will provide an introduction to the Tom Dooley Legend and overview of her 2016 book “The Dooley Files: My Search for the Truth behind the Legend” and her newest book “Dooley!” from 2019.  Following the discussion, musician Rob McHale and friends will provide a concert inspired by stories of some of our greatest Folk Legends.

Mushrooms: Foraging and Cultivation Presentation at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library

Join Dr. George Place, Catawba County Cooperative Extension Director in a presentation about mushrooms on Thursday, September 12, 2019 at 6:00 p.m.  We are surrounded by delicious mushrooms and deadly mushrooms.  This presentation will put you on the path to becoming a confident mushroom hunter.  We will also talk about how easy it is to grow your own mushrooms. This presentation is part of our Advanced Gardener series designed to help both beginner and advanced gardeners enjoy all of the health, enjoyment, and learning that comes from managing the home landscape and growing some of your own produce.
