City Parks Closed Monday, June 10

All City of Hickory parks will be closed on Monday, June 10, in order for City staff to fully inspect park areas to ensure the safety of visitors.  Recreation centers will operate on normal hours.

Inclement Weather Updates - 6.9.2019

Since Friday afternoon, the City of Hickory has experienced prolonged periods of heavy rainfall, resulting in flooding and flash flooding in some areas.  In response, Hickory Mayor Hank Guess declared an official state of emergency within the City of Hickory, effective 9 a.m., on Sunday, June 9.  Flooding in the City has resulted in significant infrastructure damage to streets, bridges, and other public infrastructure, as well as citizens being displaced from their homes.  Read the full article for more details.

Summer Learning for Adults at Hickory Public Library

The excitement for summer learning has expanded to include adults at Hickory Public Library from June 15 – August 24, 2019.  The 2019 theme “A Universe of Stories” encourages adults to experience the joy of learning and reading with astronomical influences.  Reading relieves stress, strengthens the brain, and builds empathy.  Learn new things or expand your knowledge of current interests this summer for free with library materials and library programs.

Suah African Dance Theatre Performance at the Drendel Auditorium

Join Patrick Beaver Memorial Library at the Drendel Auditorium on the SALT Block on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. for an edutainment program presented by the Suah African Dance Theatre.  This program will give you the chance to learn more about the West African culture through diverse music and dancing.  The Suah African Dance Theatre is a professional touring African drum and dance company based in Greensboro, NC.

Come to Patrick Beaver Memorial Library on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at 12:30 p.m. for a West African Dance Class led by the Suah African Dance Theatre.  This class is for all levels and ages.  Please come with an open mind and positive energies to work as a team learning about West African traditional song and dance.  The Suah African Dance Theatre is a professional touring African drum and dance company based in Greensboro, NC.

Summer Lawn Care Presentation at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library

A series of presentations focusing on lawn care is being offered at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library.  This second of three presentations will focus on summer lawn maintenance and it will be offered on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at 6:00 p.m.  Each of the presentations in the Lawn Care by the Season series will be led by Adam Smith and focus on a specific season of lawn maintenance.

Summer Learning Kick Off Celebration at the Ridgeview Branch Library

3, 2, 1…Blast off into the Ridgeview Branch Library to celebrate the start of an awesome Summer Learning program full of stars, astronauts, aliens, and awesome stories! To celebrate, SUAH African Dance Theatre will perform at the Ridgeview Recreation Center at 2 pm on Saturday, June 15. Following their performance the party will move right next door to the Ridgeview Branch Library for frozen yogurt from Di’lishi, groovy caricatures from artist Jerry Frazee, and more fun activities and games. Please note that there will be a limit of one frozen yogurt per person present and will be served on a first come basis. This family event is free and open to the public.
