Shooting suspect in custody

UPDATE April 6, 2023, 2:30 p.m. - Toland Huff Jr. turned himself in to the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office Thursday afternoon. He was charged with Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill and Discharging a Firearm in the City Limits. He was placed under a $200,000 secured bond.

 

April 4, 2023, 6 p.m. - On Monday, April 3, at approximately 10:23 p.m., an officer on patrol heard multiple gunshots in the area of the 900 block of South Center Street. Upon arriving in the area, the officer was advised that an 18-year-old male victim, Niquezion Shuford, was hiding inside of the Dana Mini Mart, 935 South Center Street. The victim and witnesses advised that a light colored SUV pulled up beside Shuford as he was walking in the area and that a passenger exited the vehicle with a rifle and began firing rounds at Shuford as he ran away. Witnesses of the incident identified Toland Huff Jr., 18, as the shooter. The victim was not injured during the shooting and multiple shell casings were recovered.

The Hickory Police Department is searching for Toland Huff Jr. in reference to charges for Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill and Discharging a Firearm in the City Limits in connection to this incident.

Huff is currently out on bond for attempted murder charges for a shooting incident at Sunny Valley Apartments on Tuesday, March 14, 2023.
