Police Cadet and Apprenticeships
HPD offers a police cadet position for students actively pursuing a bachelor’s degree at Appalachian State University. A person in this position will work as a community response unit.
HPD also offers paid apprenticeships to recent upcoming high school graduates who are interested in a career in municipal policing. While enrolled and attending Catawba Valley Community College, a person in this position will work as a community response unit.
Community response units assist in securing assigned areas throughout the City of Hickory. These assigned areas could vary in physical terrain and locations to include the City of Hickory parks and trail systems, the Downtown Social District, Hickory City Walk and Book Walk, Hickory River Walk, and assist staff at the Arts and Science Center. A person in this position would be conducting security checks of these locations on foot, on a bicycle, or in a motor vehicle, to ensure the safety and security of citizens, personnel, and property. This person will make reports to the proper authority if a situation arises. They will maintain radio communications with the Hickory Police Department Communications Center and will file all necessary reports when required by the Hickory Police Department. This position would make some electronic reports via computer and would require basic computer skills.
Internships
HPD offers paid internships on a limited basis to college seniors who are interested in a career in municipal policing.
Students who are interested in furthering their criminal justice education with HPD will have to pass a rigorous application and background process and must be offered college credit hours in exchange for the time worked with us.
