Library Sign-Up Month

This September, Hickory Public Library invites you to celebrate Library Card Sign-Up Month, a time to discover how one small card can lead to a lifetime of learning, creativity, and connection.

A library card is more than just access to books. It’s your ticket to free classes, job search tools, homework help, streaming services, cultural events, and so much more. Libraries today are vibrant community hubs that connect people to information, inspiration, and each other.

This year’s theme, “One Card, Endless Possibilities,” highlights the power of libraries to support everyone—regardless of age, background, or goals. Whether you're exploring a new hobby, diving into a great book, sharpening your tech skills, or helping your child thrive in school, it all begins with a library card.

At Hickory Public Library, you’ll find:

• The Learning Lab – A hands-on makerspace filled with tools and technology to support creativity, learning, and accessibility.
• Genealogy/North Carolina Room – A treasure trove of historical and genealogical resources focused on Catawba County and North Carolina.
• Rootle Discovery Corner – A playful, child-friendly space designed to spark curiosity and support early learning.
• Programs for all ages – From storytimes and book clubs to job search assistance and tech help, there’s something for everyone.

Getting a library card is easy and empowering. For students, it’s a key to academic success. For adults, it’s a gateway to lifelong learning. For everyone, it’s a smart way to stay connected to your community.

Residents of Hickory and Catawba County may use Hickory’s libraries free of charge. For anyone living outside Catawba County, there is an annual fee of $75. 

Residents ages 16 and up may register for library accounts with a photo ID and proof of current address. A current driver’s license will meet both requirements. Parents may apply for cards for children younger than 18. The child must be present when the account is issued.

Cards are also available at no cost to students of Lenoir-Rhyne University; employees of the City of Hickory, Catawba County Government, and Hickory City Schools; and media specialists from Catawba County Schools. Please bring your student or employee identification when you apply for your card.
