Kick off your Summer with Hickory Public Library!

Kick off your summer with Hickory Public Library by signing up for our awesome Summer Learning Program! Our theme this year is All Together Now - so everyone, from babies to adults, is invited and encouraged to participate. From June 5 through August 5, you can join us at the library for awesome performers, programs, and win prizes through reading and activities by signing up for a BINGO card. Visit us at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library or Ridgeview Branch Library starting June 5 to get signed up!

Summer Learning Kick Off & Sign-up: DIY Book Bags

Family—All Together Now we can have a tote-ally awesome summer. Sign up for our Summer Learning Program and decorate your canvas bag to take home books all summer long.

Bright Star Theatre: Aesop’s Fables   
Tues. | June 6 | 11 a.m.  
Family—Bright Star Theatre brings to life the stories of Greek storyteller Aesop including “The Tortoise and the Hare,” “The Boy Who Cried Wolf,” and “The Lion and the Mouse”. These charming tales are brimming with audience participation and are guaranteed to leave audiences of all ages rolling in the aisles with delight! No registration is required, but will be limited to the first 75 individuals.

Tales and Songs with Sharon Clarke  

Wed. | June 7 | 10 a.m.  
Family—Sharon Clarke will use her magical storytelling and engaging folk music to teach children about the world, new ideas, and the magic of books. No registration is required, but will be limited to the first 75 individuals.

A Story and a Song with Mountain Sam Wheelock  
Wed. | June 7 | 6:30 p.m.  
Teen & Adult—Mountain Sam Wheelock is the grandson of a Tennessee moonshiner whose family tree branches to the Carter Family. His one-man show "A Story and a Song'' is a nontraditional look at the music of the Southern Appalachian Mountains. The stories and songs reach into the soul of a people with a surprising and truly unique perspective regarding who we are and the music we honestly create. Wheelock is a featured performer on “Song of the Mountain, an award-winning public television series showcasing music, musicians, musical heritage, and culture of the Southern Appalachians. Registration is required and will open three weeks before the event.

A Wild Goose Chase!  
Thurs. | June 8 | 11 a.m.
Family—Poetry springs hilariously to life as soon as Matt Sandbank's shadow puppets hit the screen! A Wild Goose Chase introduces the fun and whimsy of poetry with a collection of short, interactive skits. Audience members will help Matt create rhythms, images, and even a whole poem or two, and they will soon be heading to section 811 of the library to continue their adventures in poetry! No registration is required, but will be limited to the first 75 individuals.

Coffee in the Coe  
Thur. | June 8 | 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m.  
Adult—The library will host a series of TED Talks and discussions at Coffee in the Coe in partnership with Hickory Museum of Art and the Charles White: A Little Higher exhibit. The topic for June is The Shifting Narrative of Black Art. No registration is required.

Children—Investigate the fascinating world of rocks, gems, and minerals with The Schiele Museum! Learn some identification and sorting techniques to find, examine, and classify minerals. Treasure-seekers get to keep the gemstones they find. Registration is required and will open 3 weeks before the event.

Tinker Tales: Germs!  
Fri. | June 9 | 2 p.m.  
Family—Bring your family and friends to the library to hear new stories and explore STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) through hands-on tinkering in this story time meant for all ages. This month we’ll learn about the good, the bad, and the ugly world of germs.

Tiny Tech: Bugs  
Sat. | June 10 | 10-11:30 a.m.  
Children—Learn about the anatomy of crawly creatures and make butterfly rings, fuzzy bugs that light up, and more! Appropriate for ages 7 and up. No registration is required.
