Mayoral Statement on Federal Activity in Hickory
On Nov. 24, City of Hickory Mayor Hank Guess released the following statement:
Recent federal immigration enforcement actions in Hickory have caused fear and uncertainty for many of our residents.
I want to be clear: every person in our community, regardless of background, race, or ethnicity, is a vital thread in the fabric of Hickory. We are stronger because of our diversity, not in spite of it.
The Latino community is an essential part of Hickory’s identity, contributing to our economy, enriching our culture, and helping to build the vibrant, welcoming city we all cherish. Families, workers, students, and small business owners from all walks of life make Hickory what it is today. Their presence is not only valued, it is indispensable.
I want to emphasize that the City of Hickory was not consulted, nor did we participate in the enforcement actions that occurred last week. These actions were carried out unilaterally by federal authorities.
No one should have to live in fear. No child should be afraid to go to school. No parent should be afraid to go to work. And no neighbor should feel unsafe in their own home. We support one another and ensure that Hickory remains a place where everyone feels seen, respected, and safe.
To those who are feeling afraid or uncertain right now: you are not alone. We see you. We care about you. And we will continue working to ensure that Hickory is a community where compassion and dignity are valued.
Thank you.
