Meet Chip

The Origin of Chip: Hickory’s Handy Helper

Chip

Long ago along the banks of the Henry Fork River, a young beaver discovered his love for building things. While others in his lodge fashioned ordinary dams, this beaver—named Chip—experimented with clever channels, sturdy walls, and beautifully crafted entrances. He didn’t just build for himself; Chip built for everyone around him. If a neighbor needed a stronger shelter, Chip was there with a toolbox and a smile. If the riverbanks needed tidying, Chip organized a cleanup. Helping others simply came naturally.

As Chip explored farther from the water’s edge, he found himself drawn to the bustling heart of Hickory. He admired how people worked together to shape the community—creating parks, fixing roads, improving neighborhoods, and always looking for ways to make life better. Chip realized that this spirit matched his own. He wanted to be part of it.

So Chip built a new home right here in Hickory, using local lumber and plenty of elbow grease. Word quickly spread about a friendly beaver with a talent for solving problems—big or small. City staff noticed Chip’s eagerness to help, his knack for answering questions, and his commitment to making the community stronger. Before long, they invited him to join their team as Hickory’s official virtual assistant.

Today, Chip uses his builder’s mindset and problem‑solving tools to guide residents through everything the city has to offer—from finding services to learning about events to helping people stay connected. Whether someone needs a permit, wants to explore Hickory’s outdoor amenities, or simply has a question, Chip is there—steady, resourceful, and ready to lend a paw.

Chip may have started as a riverbank builder, but he has become something much more:

a trusted helper, a cheerful maker, and a proud public servant working every day to build a better Hickory. A true Hickory Doer and Maker!
