Support Services is one of the three divisions within the police department. The primary responsibility of this division is directed at enhancing police service in a support role to ensure officers have the necessary resources available to accomplish departmental goals and objectives. This behind the scene involvement in the police service is an essential component of the police department offering the highest level of police service to the citizens and visitors. Support Services include Code Enforcement, School Resource Officers, Crime Prevention, Special Investigations/Inspections, Communications, Records, Animal Control, Parking, and Career Development/Recruitment.

Community Services

Community Services is responsible for crime prevention, education, community events, school resource officers, crime prevention Explorers Program, Citizen’s Police Academy and many other community-related areas.

Crime Prevention

Crime prevention officers partner with other agencies in an effort to reduce community crime and educate citizens. Some of the functions include conducting public speaking engagements, providing workshops to community groups and organizations, organizing community watch programs, giving tours of the police department and participating in other community functions.

School Resource Officers

School resource officers (SRO) are assigned to Hickory City public schools. Each high school is assigned one SRO as their primary assignment. In addition, HPD provides SROs that jointly cover middle school and elementary school levels. SROs have a number of responsibilities that include: investigating crimes; enforcing federal, state and local laws and ordinances; conducting security inspections to deter criminal or delinquent activities; establishing a close partnership with school administrators in order to provide for a safe school environment; providing D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse< Resistance Education) and increasing the visibility and accessibility of police to the school community.

Hickory High School, Hickory Career Arts and Magnet High School, Grandview Middle School and Northview Middle School

Law Enforcement Exploring is for young men and women ages 14 to 20. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month from 5:00 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at the Floyd W. Lucas Police Headquarters located at 347 2nd Ave SW, Hickory, NC.
