Approved Race Routes on public roads
 

Half Marathon Route 1 (13.1 miles) DOT/City approved Charity Chase Half Marathon on a Sunday, first Sunday in June.

6 5Ks
5K 1 – Downtown 5k (Not allowed on Saturdays during the Farmers Market which is April 18 – November 28)
5K 2 – Hickory Foundation YMCA (Can start and finish in Downtown District)
5K 3 - FRMC 5K (Can start and finish in Downtown District)
5K 4 – Neill Clark Park 5k (Must call Recreation and Sports Tourism Department to get OK prior to submitting Special Use Permit. Contact Mark Seaman – mseaman@hickorync.gov or 828-322-7046.
5K 5 – Winkler Park 5k (Must contact Recreation and Sports Tourism and Hickory Crawdads to get OK prior to submitting Special Use Permit. Contact Mark Seaman – mseaman@hickorync.gov or 828-322-7046 and Hickory Crawdads Douglas Locascio dlocascio@hickorycrawdads.com or 828-322-3000.
5K 6 – LRU 5K (Must clear route with LRU before submitting Special Use Permit and Can start and finish in various locations)
1 10K (or can do a 5k route twice)
10K 1 – Hickory Foundation YMCA (Can start and finish in Downtown District)
Special Routes allowed due to location, and back streets with low traffic counts that does not take many officers on the route.
Cycle Routes (10 miles  / 32 miles / 55 miles ) Carolina Cycle Challenge uses all three routes DOT/City approved on Sunday – 1st Sunday in October.

Hickory Regional Airport 5k
 

Begins on main runway, most of run on secondary runway, distance calculated and route complete.
 

2015 5k Airport  
 

Process: Contact Airport Manager Terry Clark at Hickory Regional Airport, pay any airport rental fee ($75 room rental fee per day and/or room fee waived if event uses Cross Wind Café’ for food/drinks, etc), ok the date, then fill out a Special Event Application, with Teresa knowing the event has been approved by Terry Clark.
 

Hickory Parks
 

Process: Contact Recreation and Sports Tourism Director Mark Seaman to get information on date ability and costs of picnic shelters or centers that will be needed for the event. The date, and fee must be paid and approved by Mark Seaman, before filling out a Special Event Application.

Geitner-Rotary/Hickory City 3 mile paved walking trail
 

Parkin available at Jaycee Park parking lot. Event Headquarters could be located at Hickory City Park Shelter.

Begin by the trail starting at Hickory City Park, go to Geitner-Rotary Park, then turn around and come back up trail.


Henry Fork River Park
 

Layout – Plenty of parking. Event headquarters could be located at one of the picnic shelters.

Process:  Call Hickory Recreation and Sports Tourism to reserve shelter (pay rental fee), reserve it, pay fee, fill out Special Event Application, with Teresa knowing the event has be OK’d by Mark Seaman/Recreation and Sports Tourism Director.

Each loop without cut through near smaller shelter is about ¾ a mile. Do the loop four times, and finish by taking the paved path by the Soccer Ball Art, and finish mid-way to make up the .1.


 

Neill W. Clark Jr., Recreation Park
 

NOTE: This is this 5k4 with start/finish at this park.

Below are other ideas non-profits may like to raise money for their organizations.

Course: Start on Field 1 and begin walking toward the fence, follow fence line to fields behind the gym, and use paved road toward Field 1. Each loop is about half a mile, six times around would be about 3 miles.

Addition: After the first loop, as participants begin second loop at start do 25 jumping jacks, then run/walk course. Mid-way by fourth field, do 25 crunches and/or sit ups.

An organization can choose for participants to continue jumping jacks/sit ups and/or crunches until 3 mile is up.


Highland Recreation Center Options
 

Must call Recreation and Sports Tourism. Reserve Shelter, and check to see if dates are days when there is not a tournament and/or basketball or softball season.

Ideal location for Sunday afternoon fundraiser walks too. The center is closed that day. Pay rental fees. And bathrooms by the ball field should be used as well.

A picnic shelter could be rented and/or there is room for a tent check in area in parking lot or by the parking lot.

NOTE: Sidewalks are along these routes, and will be used in these options.
 

Option 1

3.2 miles

One at the 8th Ave. NE /8th St. NE intersection.
 

Start at Highland Recreation Center at 8th Dr. NE, take a right out of parking lot toward LRU.
Will need One police officer at the 8th NE /8th St. NE intersection.
Follow sidewalk by LRU and turn right on 7th NE (by large LRU sign and across street from St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church).
Take right on 5th St. NE (in front of LRU gym)
Take right on 8th NE
Complete circle around LRU again (does not include Horseshoe area by library).
After second circle, take a left on 8th NE back to Highland
Option 2

One at the 2nd Ave., NE/Main Ave. NE (near Allegra Printing)

Start at Highland Recreation Center at 8th Dr. NE, take a right out of parking lot toward LRU.
8th turns into Main Ave. after LRU, follow until 1st Ave. NE (before Sally M. Fox Park). = approximately 1.55 miles
Turn around and go back to Highland Recreation Center = 3.1 miles
 

Option 3

4.5 miles

One at the 8th Ave. NE /8th St. NE intersection.

One at the 2nd Ave. NE/Main Ave. NE (near Allegra Printing)

Course

Start at Highland Recreation Center at 8th Dr. NE, take a right out of parking lot toward LRU.
8th turns into Main Ave. after LRU, follow until 4th St. NW (by Elks Lodge)
Right on 1st NW (by Griffin Security)
Take right on 2nd NE (before Sherwin Williams Paint store)
Take left on Main Avenue and follow to Highland Recreation Center.
