Working smoke alarms alert occupants to house fire

At 11:10 a.m. Tuesday, Hickory Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire at 449 17th Avenue NE. Hickory Fire arrived on scene with smoke coming from the front door. The two-story home suffered moderate damage, making it inhabitable for the occupants. Due to the quick alert from their working smoke alarms, all occupants were able to safely exit their home before the first company arrived. Upon arrival, firefighters were informed of two cats still inside of the home. Minutes in, one cat was able to run out of the house and after the fire was extinguished, the second cat was saved. The cause of the fire was investigated and determined to be an electrical issue. The Red Cross responded and will be assisting the occupants.
